Visiting my big brother!

My brother Leon is almost 21 years old and lives on the campus of his school, USC (University of Southern California). He is very sweet and lovable.

Leon always tells me to work hard, so I can attend a great university just like him!
His grades were so good that he received a full scholarship after high school. That means that my parents do not have to pay for his classes. I sure hope that I will get a scholarship too!
I was very sad when Leon moved away from home, but I love when he picks me up and takes me on a tour of his university.

His school, USC, was founded in 1880 and is the oldest private research university in California.
It has many traditions.
For example, on their way to a football game and back, the students will kick a flagpole for good luck.
Another important tradition are the school colors, cardinal red and gold.

My daddy and brother in cardinal and gold!

I really liked the statue of George Tirebiter, the dog who was USC's unofficial mascot for a while. He wandered onto the campus in the 1940's and always chased cars to bite their tires! He was brought to football games in a limousine and led the marching band to the field. The students loved him even more when he bit the nose of a rival mascot!

George Tirebiter and I

The most important statue on campus is a life size Trojan warrior called Tommy Trojan. All  USC teams are called Trojans. My brother told me that a newspaper wrote that USC athletes fought and took losses bravely like Trojans ( warriors from ancient Greece) . The name stuck like glue.
During football games against USC's biggest rival UCLA, Tommy gets wrapped up in duct tape to protect him from vandalism.

My favorite building was the library. It is a reader's dream! There is even a basement with lots of
books!

Part of the library

Lastly, we visited my brother's fraternity house, where he shares a room with another student. Only boys can be members of a student fraternity. There is a sorority house across the street. Only female students can join a sorority.  I hope, I can be part of a sorority at USC one time!

Spending time with my brother was fun and exciting. I wished I could see him more!

Having fun with my big brother

  1. Dear Kelly,

I really enjoyed reading your post about your visit with your brother, Leon! The text was so well written with lots of definition sentences for people who don't know about university life.

My favorite picture is the last one of you and your brother. You can really tell how much you two are enjoying your visit.

I graduated from University of California at Santa Barbara. It is a state university, and I enjoy my time there. I was not in a sorority, but many girls were.

    What is your brother studying?

    1. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Thank you for the wonderful comment. My brother's best friend, Lewis goes to UCSB. He really likes it there also. Although, Lewis is not studying to be a teacher but actually he is studying Internacional Business. On the other hand, Leon is studying Law because he wants to be a lawyer. He really enjoys studying the law and knowing he will make good money is even better.

  2. Dear Kelly,

This is a wonderful post. I can easily tell how much you love your brother. He seems not only a big brother but a close friend. You are part of an amazing family.

I may be in Australia but I have often heard of U.S.C. and know it's an excellent university. As I attended university in Australia on a full scholarship, I know how much easier life is without the strain of finding the money.

With your brother having a full scholarship, it shows how good a student he must be. His advice is good. When we work hard towards a goal and try our best, it's amazing what we can achieve. One day we may hear news of your entry into U.S.C. on full scholarship. That would be wonderful.

My university was Sydney University. It was the first established in the country back in 1850. Like U.S.C., it has a long history and many distinguished graduates.

Because of movies, I have heard of the U.S.C. Trojans. That must mean they're a wonderful team.

Thanks you for sharing your experiences with your brother. I'm certain your parents are proud of both of you. :)

    1. Dear Mr. Mannell,

Thank you for your great comment and compliments! Yes, having a full scholarship makes college much easier. I agree the result of working hard can really pay of in the future. My dream is to go to USC and hopefully get a scholarship. Sydney University sounds like an excellent school and it must of been a lot of fun. My parents are very proud of both of us indeed.

Were you in any fraternity and if so which one?

      Sincerely,
      Kelly♥

  3. Hi Kelly!
This was a really sweet post! It's so adorable when younger siblings show their love for their older siblings. I am your brother's age (almost 21) and I have been away from home for college about 3 years now. I attend the University of South Alabama in Mobile, Alabama. Not even close to California. I have a 16 year old sister and a 6 year old brother. They love when I come home to see them because I always take them out to each and treat them with a gift. I know your brother misses you very much.
You know so much information about your brother's University. All your pictures showed that you had a blast! You should definitely attend USC when you graduate high school.
Well, I enjoyed reading your blog and I hope you choose to continue on with this great hobby.

    1. Dear Chanel,

Thank you for your great comment. It is so nice that you give your younger siblings gifts and take them out to eat. They really appreciate your love and attention as I do when my brother spends time with me. It really was such a blast seeing such a beautiful campus and seeing his dorm. I am so glad that I have an older brother who truly love me. I really want to go to USC after high school like him.

What are you studying at your university?

    2. Hello Kelly!
I am studying Elementary Special Education. I am in a class called EDM 310 which teaches us new technology for our future students and shows us how elementary students today are using technology. That is how I came across your blog because we have to comment on a student's blog once a week.
Getting to USC won't be a problem for you, just keep up the hard work and you will definitely succeed!

  4. Hi Kelly!
I loved reading your post! I can tell how much fun you had with your brother just by looking at your pictures. I especially loved the picture of the library. I love to read, and it does look like a reader's dream. You also seem to know a lot of information about U.S.C. It is always beneficial to know about a college's history and traditions.
I am very glad that you want to go to college, just like your big brother. Leon gave you great advice about working hard in school. It can be difficult sometimes, but it will be worth it when you receive your own scholarship to the University of Southern California.
Your blog was very well written, and I enjoyed reading it. Keep up the good work!

    1. Dear Laura,

Thank you for your wonderful comment. I love to read also. My favorite author is Andrew Clements. He writes realistic fiction and some mysteries. My brother tells me a lot of information about the history of USC. It is my dream to go there. I think that by working hard I can also get a scholarship to USC. Thank you.

What types of books do you like to read? Who is your favorite author?

  5. Dear Kelly,

I loved reading your post. USC is my alma mater (a school I attended). In fact, I was there for almost 10 years! Many members of my family have connections with the school. My sister and her husband both graduated from USC, my mom works at USC and my husband used to work at USC. It is a great school and I hope that some day Miriam and Sarah will go there. Do you think you may want to attend USC as well?

It is as a great school and congratulation to Leon for getting accepted with a full scholarship. He has set a great example.

Reading your post brought a lot of good memories for me and taught me some interesting facts that I didn't know. Well done!

  6. Dear Kelly,

I love your post! If my big brother moved away to college, I would miss him a lot! I don't know what I would do without him. Unfortunately, I only have one sibling, so when the time comes, he is going to move to college. He is older so he is going before me.

When I went to Florida, we visited my mom's college! She was really excited to see it again. I don't really know if it was a University or not.

Thank you for your nice comment. Even though, my brother is in college he still comes to visit me. Don't worry your brother will visit you too. You have a long time until he goes to college. That is so nice that you were able to visit your mom's college. Seems like that was fun for you guys.

What do you want to study in college?

  7. Dear Kelly,

Your blog is great! I really enjoyed your post about your brother and your visit to his school. The pictures are great and I can tell that you two are very close. You used wonderful details and I learned a lot about your brother, as well as USC. I see that your favorite place was the library, which tells me you must love to read. I live in Mobile, AL and attend the University of South Alabama and I am in my second year. You also asked about our siblings. I have one sister and we are identical twins. She attends the same university as me and we are super close as well. You said you wanted to attend the same school as your brother when you get older. Do you know yet what you want to study when you go to college?

    Sincerely,
    Lindsey Edwards

    1. Dear Lindsey,

I love your comment! Is it fun being a twin? I think it must be so much fun going to the same school as your sister. Do people mistake you for your her? Does she study the same as you?
I think it's great that you want to be a teacher!

I don't know what I want to study for sure yet, but there are many things I am interested in.
One thing is being a marine photographer. I am also interested in ballet and fashion designing.

How do you like South Alabama? I have never been there!

      Love,

      Kelly

    2. Dear Kelly,

I love being a twin and I really enjoy going to the same school as my sister. We are super close and have always been best friends so I would miss her a lot if we lived far away from each other. At school, random people come up and start to talking to me about classes that they have with my sister cause they think that I am her. They are always very surprised to discover she has a twin and that they have the wrong one. She is studying pharmacy so we don't have any of the same classes. Those are all really interesting and cool things to study. I saw some of your other posts about ballet and I think that is awesome that you have found an activity you really enjoy. I like South Alabama a lot and have made so many new friends there. I am also from the area so I get to live at home, with my family, which is very close to the school.

      Sincerely,
      Lindsey Edwards
