Winter fun in Big Bear

Living in Southern California is great fun.
We live only 30 minutes away from the ocean and our summers are very long.
Unfortunately, during winter time, it is too warm for snow in my area.
My mom and I love the snow and this winter break my family drove up to Big Bear
for some snowtastic fun!

We stayed in one of these mansions! Not...but our log
cabin was very cosy and comfortable :0)

The car ride was 3 hours, which is not too bad at all.
We made it up some seriously steep and twisty roads and finally the elevation
was high enough to see the first snow! We stopped, got out of the car and had a little snow ball fight.
Have I mentioned, that I adore snow? :0)

Arriving on the mountain

This was our second time in Big Bear, but last time, we just went sledding. Now it was time to learn how
to ski. We rented skies, shoes and helmet and got up early next day for my first ski school lesson.
It was such amazing, tremendous, ultimate fun! The weather was sunny and not cold at all.
My instructor told me, that she had graduated from high school 2 years early! She was very smart
and sweet and I missed her a lot when we had to leave.

Sometimes there is not enough snow even in the mountains and snow has to be made from water
and blown onto the slopes with big cannons.

After skiing we cooked dinner in our cabin kitchen and I had a big mug of hot chocolate every
night. Hot chocolate on a cold night is sensational.
I hope we drive into the snow again soon!

Have you been skiing?
Do you like the snow?
Have you been to Big Bear?

  1. Dear Kelly
I enjoyed reading your description of your skiing trip. I hope you get to go again soon to practice your new skiing skills!
I love your photo of the mountain with the little patch of sunlight on the top. We have a mountain near us that has an oblpng-shaped place near the top called 'The Tablecloth'. That part always gets the first and last patch of snow each winter.

Does the lake ever get frozen enough to ice-skate on?

    1. Dear Mrs. McKenzie,

Thank you for your wonderful comment!

Big Lake was not frozen enough for skating when we were there, but I saw skaters on the lake in a youtube video. My says, it is not save though. I have been skating once before and it was lots of fun.

Hopefully we are going back to Big Bear soon!

      Love,

      Kelly

  2. Dear Kelly,

Your blog looks great. I was very interested in your post about Big Bear. We are planning our first trip there next month. Although I want there to be snow on the ground, I hope it does't snow while we are driving. It sounds like the road to Big Bear is dangerous!

Royce will let you know if he has as much fun as you had.

    Sincerely,

    Tara (Royce's mom)

  3. Dear Kelly,

I loved reading your post about your ski trip and the photos you took of big bear were beautiful. I love to ski and it made me miss the snow. We have not yet gone skiing this winter in part because it has been rather warm and there hasn't been too much snow. Hopefully it will rain soon and we get some more snow.

Was this your first time skiing? Did you think skiing was hard?

    Sincerely,
    Victoria

    1. Dear Victoria,

Thank you very much for commenting!
This was my first time skiing and I did not think it was too hard!
I read that it just snowed in Big Bear and it should be great skiing now.
I wished we could go back skiing next weekend.

      Love,

      Kelly

  4. Dear Kelly,

I really enjoyed reading your post, and you photos where gorgeous. I went skiing last year and I really liked it. My favorite part was going down the blue marked slope which is an intermediate slope. I went down so fast. The first it was scarry, but then it was really fun. I really like the snow especially to throw snow balls at my sister Miriam. I hope we will go again skiing this year. I have never been to Big Bear but after reading your post, I really want to go.

    1. Dear Sarah,

Thank you for commenting! Were did your family go skiing?
Did you have to drive a long time? I like that Big Bear is not too far away.

Since it was my first time skiing, I only went on the beginner slopes. My mom promised to ski with me next time and I would love to check out the intermediate slopes!

Maybe we see each other in Big Bear one time!

      Your friend,

      Kelly
